The Challenge
The health region of Haut-Sassandra is facing major challenges in managing skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (skin NTDs), in particular Buruli ulcer (BU), onchocerciasis, leprosy and yaws.
The lack of comprehensive data and a weak health infrastructure hinder the early detection and effective treatment of these diseases. In addition, polluted water and geographical remoteness – due to impassable roads – further aggravate the situation, impeding access to adequate medical services and contributing to the spread of BU.
The solution
To help prevent disabilities and stigmatisation, the project aims to improve the quality of life of people in the region affected by skin NTDs by focusing on active case detection, social integration and the creation of Income Generating Activities.
It will concentrate on two main sets of activities: awareness-raising and health aspects. The activities include the launch of the project, active case detection, management of people with disabilities, community sensitisation and training for volunteers and community leaders.
Impact
The project is expected to have a significant impact in the region as the number of cases of skin NTDs detected early will increase; this will help to reduce the associated stigma and discrimination, and promote social inclusion and active community participation in the fight against these diseases.
Improved access to health services and a reduction in the incidence of skin NTDs in the Haut-Sassandra region is expected thanks to the creation of networks between civil society organisations and a strengthening of the capacity of the people affected.
