The Challenge
The Ellembelle District is one of the 17 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Western Region of Ghana.
It is amongst the districts with the highest prevalence of skin NTDs in the country.
The solution
Advocate for Youthis a youth centred NGO committed to complementing the education of young people in schools, developing and sustaining their interest in development processes regarding health, employment, migration and education among other socially relevant interventions. By working with them we are supporting a project that focuses primarily on creating a culture of inclusion among the general population through a behaviour change approach that seeks to create a movement for ending the neglect and ensure an enabling environment where the health system adequately responsive.
In addition, the project aims to provide beneficiaries with livelihood skills and reintegrate some into their previous employment. Innovative strategies to sensitize people who have suffered from NTDs and people at risk on recommended WASH practices, and provide boreholes to deprived communities is also envisioned during the lifespan of the intervention.
Impact
By the end of the project we envision a behavioural change towards skin-NTDs in the endemic communities suffering from them.
Resulting in a lower prevalence of this diseases and greater acceptance of those suffering from any NTD.
